Apple Advanced Data Protection

Apple Advanced Data Protection

Apple Advanced Data Protection (ADP) is an optional iCloud setting that extends end-to-end encryption to additional categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes. Apple states that it cannot decrypt data in the protected categories.

Enabling ADP moves more recovery responsibility to the user. Apple requires an alternative recovery method, such as a recovery contact or recovery key, because Apple cannot recover the newly protected content on its own. Some categories and metadata remain outside ADP’s expanded protection.

The feature is a useful comparison in Privacy competitors and inspirations: stronger provider-inaccessible encryption and provider-mediated account recovery cannot both be maximized without a disclosed recovery authority. Availability is jurisdiction-dependent and should be checked before advice.
