Digital continuity and recovery

Digital continuity and recovery

Privacy tools concentrate authority in keys, devices, recovery codes, and trusted people. That protects against provider access but makes device loss, incapacity, death, coercion, and organizational turnover more consequential.

The market gap is a recovery system that does not quietly recreate a permanent master custodian.

Service before software

A recovery-design engagement can produce:

  • an inventory of critical accounts and devices
  • a classification of what must be recoverable and what should die with the user
  • tested recovery kits stored in separate locations
  • named emergency contacts with narrow roles
  • time-delayed or multi-person release where the upstream product supports it
  • instructions for incapacity, death, device seizure, and provider closure
  • an annual rehearsal and revocation check

The service should observe recovery events without copying the underlying secrets. Where sealed material is necessary, use a lawyer, notary, safe-deposit provider, or customer-controlled hardware under a separately reviewed arrangement.

Product opportunity

Repeated engagements could become a local application that tracks whether recovery artifacts are current, tests non-secret metadata, and asks designated people to confirm readiness. It should not upload vault contents or reveal the full account graph to the operator.

Revenue can be a setup fee, annual rehearsal subscription, or an employer-funded continuity benefit. Lawyers and estate planners are natural partners for succession cases.

Failure modes

  • Emergency access becomes an easy social-engineering route.
  • A family member receives broader access than intended.
  • Old recovery material remains valid after a relationship changes.
  • The operator stores enough metadata to map a customer’s most valuable accounts.
  • A legal succession document is mistaken for a technical decryption capability.

Privacy migration and continuity handles provider exit; this note handles people and key continuity. Both should inform Managed private home cloud and every product that promises E2EE.
