The mechanism is a microlouver layer: ultra-thin vertical strips that act like blinds, letting light through within a front cone of about 60 or 90 degrees and blacking out the screen beyond it. Some cheap protectors skip the louvers and simply darken the glass, which protects against glances far less. The article distinguishes tempered-glass from PET-film protectors, two-way (portrait-only) from four-way filtering, and notes that narrower viewing angles dim the user’s own screen. Coatings such as anti-glare, blue-light, and oleophobic layers are manufacturer-specific extras.
