Evidence preservation should protect both the person and the ability of another decision-maker to evaluate what happened. Swedish police guidance recommends retaining messages and threats, keeping digital originals where possible, and recording contextual details rather than relying only on memory.

A practical preservation set can include the original file or message export, an untouched backup, dates and surrounding events, account names or contact details, and a short contemporaneous note explaining how the material was obtained. Editing should be done only on a working copy. Access should be limited because the evidence may itself contain intimate or dangerous information.
