Hyunyi Cho, Christopher Carpenter, and Wenbo Li published this meta-analysis in Human Communication Research in March 2025. It pools 160 media literacy interventions from 1983 to 2023 and is the largest synthesis of the method that pornography literacy is an instance of. The preserved article (raw response) was saved 2026-07-28.
Findings
Media literacy interventions show overall positive effects, but the effects are not evenly distributed across the outcomes a policy argument would care about.
| Dimension | Result |
|---|---|
| Media-relevant outcomes | Larger effects |
| Behaviour-relevant outcomes | Smaller effects |
| Knowledge | Strongest, at both immediate post-test and follow-up |
| Social topics | Larger effects than health topics |
| Social-media-targeted interventions | Smaller effects on some outcomes |
Two further results bear on durability and mechanism. Across multiple outcomes there was no substantial decay between immediate post-test and follow-up — except for behaviour, which did decay. And attitudes and critical beliefs predicted behaviour, which is the pathway the method assumes.
Why it matters here
The pattern is the one a sceptic would predict and a proponent should still find encouraging: teaching people to think critically about media reliably changes what they know and believe about media, changes behaviour less, and holds that behaviour change least well over time.
Any claim that pornography literacy reduces harm has to travel the whole distance from knowledge to behaviour, and this is the evidence on how much is lost along the way. Does pornography literacy improve adolescent outcomes weighs it against the much thinner pornography-specific evaluation literature.
