Kashmir Hill’s November 2023 New York Times follow-up to the 2022 false-positive reporting shows Google’s revised CSAM enforcement in practice. The preserved article is the full Seattle Times syndication of the NYT piece; the rendered snapshot failed against bot protection, so the raw server response is the readable artifact.
An Australian mother, Watkins, lost her entire Google account after her seven-year-old son uploaded a silly “nudie video” of himself, made on a tablet logged into her account. The case documents the policy changes Google announced in 2022: suspension notices now name the reason category and appeals can include context, but Watkins’s repeated appeals were still denied — customer service held the video violated policy “even if a child’s oblivious act” — until a reporter’s inquiry restored the account within a day. Google conceded the content “was not uploaded maliciously” and had no answer for how a user can escalate a denied appeal short of press attention.
This is evidence that the 2022 appeals reforms improved notice and process without changing outcomes absent media leverage, which is central to CSAM scanning externalizes error costs. It also generalizes the false-positive pattern beyond medical photos to children’s own uploads, a distinct and probably larger category. Limitations: single case, subject self-report corroborated by correspondence the Times reviewed.
