This is the most current peer-reviewed synthesis of the evidence for interventions that reduce weapon carriage in United States K-12 schools. It is load-bearing for Clear backpacks are school security theater because it surveys the same empirical literature that the adopters of clear-bag mandates rely on and finds that only two studies met the review’s inclusion criteria, neither of which evaluated clear backpacks.

The decisive finding is that the evidence base is weak: target-hardening strategies including metal detectors and clear backpacks “seem intuitive [but] their utility lacks evidence” and are associated with increased student stress and undermined feelings of safety, particularly among students of color. The two studies that did meet inclusion were a random metal detector search evaluation and the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System evaluation — neither of which is a clear-bag study — and both showed only limited positive outcomes.
