Tullverket’s questions-and-answers page (captured July 2026) summarizes what a Swedish private buyer owes when ordering goods online from outside the EU.
Key rules as captured:
- Ordering within the EU incurs no Swedish customs charges.
- Ordering from outside the EU always incurs VAT, 25% for most goods, calculated on the item value plus shipping.
- Since 1 July 2026, a customs fee of 3 euro per item applies to goods worth 150 euro (about 1 800 SEK) or less; above that threshold, duty of 0–20% applies depending on the goods.
- The carrier (for example PostNord) invoices the charges and may add its own administration fee for making the customs declaration.
- Shops registered with IOSS collect the VAT at checkout, so nothing further is due on arrival; this is only possible for goods worth at most 1 800 SEK.
