The architectural argument

The page’s durable content is its account of where each system places the Tor client. In Whonix the Tor client runs on the Gateway; in Tails and the Tor Browser Bundle it runs on the workstation itself. The consequence the page draws is the one worth keeping: a root compromise on Tails lets an adversary bypass the local firewall and read the machine’s real Internet Protocol (IP) address, because that address is present on the machine, while a compromised Whonix-Workstation has no such address to disclose. Whonix concedes the converse in the forensics rows, recording Tails as amnesic by default and Whonix as amnesic only in an optional Live Mode or not at all under Qubes.

That trade is real and follows from designs neither project has since changed, so it survives the page’s staleness.

A row that is demonstrably wrong now

Under “Verifiable Builds” the page records deterministic builds for Tails as “No (planned).” Tails shipped one of the first reproducible Linux ISO images in version 3.3 in November 2017 and documents per-Git-tag reproducibility for current releases. The entry was stale when captured and is now nine years out of date.

This is the reason Desktop operating system security comparison treats cross-project comparisons as arguments rather than findings. The bias is not usually invention; it is that a project maintains its own rows and lets a rival’s decay, which produces a comparison accurate about itself and outdated about everyone else. Verify any competitor-sourced feature claim against the compared project’s current documentation before citing it.
